The problem:
You arrange the order of your quick launch icons in the bottom task bar but after a reboot they change order to alphabetical order again. Annoying!
The fix:
This is usually caused by a corrupt registry key.
You need to use the registry editor. Find the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop\\TaskbarWinXP
and delete that key. After reboot Windows will replace it with the default one and all your probs will be solved.
I couldn't find this answer on the web so had to spend a few hrs myself.
PS Always do a backup before playing with the registry!
